Duendes are creatures from the folklore of many Latin American countries, including Mexico, and parts of the southern United States, such as Texas. They are described as mischievous and sometimes malevolent entities, resembling dwarves or elves. Some tales depict them as harmless pranksters, while others describe them as dangerous and capable of causing harm.
The Story
According to legend, duendes play tricks on people and make strange noises at night. They are often blamed for lost items, broken household objects, and stolen livestock. Some communities believe that duendes can be appeased by leaving offerings of food and drink or by making crosses or other symbols near their supposed residences.
Despite their reputation, duendes are a popular subject of folklore and remain an important part of the cultural heritage in Texas and Latin America. They are often portrayed in art and literature, and their stories continue to be passed down through generations. Whether real or imagined, the tales of duendes have fascinated people for centuries. Check out what Eddie had to say about his experience on South Padre Island, TX.
“Hi, my name is Eddie. I also saw what you saw coming from Padre Island. My two daughters were in the front, driving, and my wife and I were in the back. I was looking out the right-side window when I saw a figure that was very dark and looked like it was covered in mud, with a pointy hat. The only thing different was that he had no shirt, and a necklace made of white shells. He was also carrying a rope around his body. I said, ‘What in the world?’ and my daughter immediately turned to me and told me not to say anything. We described what we saw to each other, taking turns to validate our observation. I was glad that my daughter saw it too. I’m glad you posted this. To this day, I still remember that moment, which was about 10 years ago.”-Edward
