The Story
“It wasn’t growling or dark figures, but it was something just as terrifying.
This happened around 2013-2014, though I can’t remember the exact year. I had been fighting with my boyfriend, and it was very late at night—past midnight. I needed to clear my head, so I went for a long drive. Back then, GPS wasn’t common in cars, so I was just wandering around, aimlessly.
I’m from McAllen and wasn’t too familiar with Mission beyond Bryan Rd, so I ended up driving past Taqueria Mary on Mile 5. I thought I might be close to the Alton bus crash site because I was on Mile 5, but I wasn’t sure. I’ve always been sensitive to energy, and I could feel the trauma from that area, which made me uneasy. Not wanting to go any further, I took the first turn I could find and ended up near Coco Bongo on 3 Mile and Goodwin—I’ll never forget those giant Coke cans .
It was pitch black out there at the time, and just a little while after passing Coco Bongo, something unbelievable happened. A huge figure in white came crashing down onto the road about 30 feet in front of my car. I slammed on the brakes, panicking. As the figure lifted its head, I saw the most horrifying face—a woman’s face, but horribly distorted, with no eyes and disheveled hair that reached all the way to the ground. Its arms were unusually long, with sharp, black nails or claws.
It unhinged its jaw and let out this high-pitched, blood-curdling scream. I couldn’t stop in time and ended up driving right through it as it leaped into the air. A thick white fog surrounded my car. When I finally came to a stop, I saw the figure in my rearview mirror, landing back on the road behind me. I screamed and floored it, driving 60 mph until I hit Sharyland, where I finally recognized my surroundings.
When I got home, I broke down crying and couldn’t stop screaming. I had to knock myself out with Xanax to calm down. For years after that, I kept seeing that thing—mostly in the corner of my bedroom, just watching me. I couldn’t sleep right, and I was terrified to drive at night, especially outside the city.
I’m convinced that whatever entity it was, it followed me that night and stayed with me even as I moved to two different apartments. It never tried to harm me, though—it just sat there, balled up in a corner, watching. Oddly enough, it seemed to appear more often when my ex and I were fighting. I’d wake up in the middle of the night, see it, and start screaming, but my ex could never see it.
I don’t know if it was good or evil, but once the relationship started to fizzle out, the entity disappeared. I haven’t seen it since. Still, I won’t drive past Conway at night unless I’m on the expressway. As it turns out, I was actually close to La Homa Rd when it all happened.” -Tara Dee
