As told by Izrael, Rio Grande Valley
“I met her in the summer of 2006 at Art Awakenings, that little gallery and library spot on Dove by the cigar shop in Edinburg. I still have the notebook. She wrote her number on it and two songs she’d written.
That same day I’d auditioned for some low-budget goth werewolf movie. Later that night there was something going on at an art gallery event and we ended up talking. I went to her apartment afterward. Nothing romantic happened. She was down about leaving California and a guy she’d left behind. The next day we grabbed beer and pizza and a couple of my friends came over. That was pretty much it. We stayed in touch a little, on and off.
New Year’s Day 2007 I took off for California. About the second week of January, around 3 a.m., I was lonely and just scrolling my contacts. I called her.
She sounded surprised to hear from me. I hadn’t talked to her since those couple of days we hung out.
She asked how I knew she was in the hospital.
I told her I didn’t know she was in the hospital.
She said it was fine, she’d be out soon.
The whole thing was short. She sounded sad, surprised, and hopeful all at once. I didn’t call her back after that.
I came home the last week of January. I’d only been gone about three weeks. I mentioned to my friend Marc that I’d talked to her while I was out there. That’s when he looked at me and said I couldn’t have. She’d taken her own life in December.
I didn’t know. I don’t think she knew either.
I still have the two songs she wrote in that notebook.” -Izrael
